Maroua-Meskine Protests After Minister’s Visit Cancelled

A planned visit by Finance Minister Louis Paul Motazé to Meskine (Far North) on 27 August triggered rare scenes of anger after it reportedly failed to materialise. On the weekly market day, the Lamido ordered stalls closed from 5 a.m. and instructed residents to assemble for the welcome. Organisers say significant expenses were incurred—traditional attire sourced from Nigeria, several horses and turbans for a ceremonial reception—yet the ministerial programme did not go ahead as expected.

Frustration grew as hours passed. Local CPDM militants and notables attempted to halt a ministerial convoy bound for the airport but were dispersed by security forces, witnesses said. The incident escalated into a spontaneous protest in which party outfits were burned and minor damage reported. No official casualty figures were immediately available, and authorities had not issued a formal statement at the time of publication.

The Lamido of Meskine—former mayor of rural Maroua and current substitute senator—had coordinated the welcome with party cadres. In a tense pre-election period, activists warn the episode risks alienating a CPDM stronghold and creating space for opposition parties. Community leaders are urging dialogue and clearer communication to avoid further unrest in this pivotal electoral region.
