Constant Mutamba Abducted in Kinshasa

Kinshasa, September 2, 2025 — The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing political tension following the reported abduction of former Justice Minister Constant Mutamba.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on the night of September 1–2, armed men in military uniform stormed Mutamba’s residence in Gramalick. The politician, also a lawyer, was taken away while he was surrounded by supporters awaiting the verdict of his highly publicized trial scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Since dawn, access roads to the residence have been sealed off and guarded by heavily armed soldiers. Authorities have not released an official statement to explain the circumstances of the operation, nor confirmed whether Mutamba is in legal custody.
The disappearance has sparked widespread concern across political and civil society circles. Calls for transparency and respect for fundamental rights are rapidly spreading on social media and in local media outlets.
The incident raises pressing questions: Where is Constant Mutamba? Why was he taken? And is this a lawful arrest or a politically motivated act of intimidation?
