Cameroon Reports Sharp Decline in Corruption Losses

Cameroon recorded about CFAF 4 billion in public losses linked to corruption in 2024, a steep decline from CFAF 114 billion in 2023, according to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (CONAC). The figures were presented on Wednesday, 27 August, by CONAC chair Rev. Dr. Dieudonné Massi Gams during the formal release of the commission’s 2024 annual report.

The event brought together senior government officials, diplomats, representatives of Transparency International, jurists, civil-society leaders, and delegates from the Special Criminal Court (TCS) and the National Debt Recovery Company (SONARA/SNR), who were cited for their roles in asset recovery and prosecution of complex graft cases.

CONAC says the new report pairs headline numbers with forward-looking projections and a set of commitments aimed at tightening prevention and sanctions. The commission highlighted stronger coordination among judicial, administrative and financial watchdogs as a factor behind improved recoveries and deterrence in 2024.

While the headline data point to progress, governance advocates caution that the gains must be consolidated through consistent prosecutions, transparent follow-up on case files, and broader public-finance controls—particularly in state-owned enterprises and procurement. CONAC, for its part, says it will intensify sector audits and work streams with the Special Criminal Court to ensure stolen funds are traced and returned to the treasury.
